2018 Year in Review

What a year it has been for The NextGen Genealogy Network! 2018 has been our most successful year yet and we have made great strides in connecting young genealogists around the world.  Here is a round up of the years best bits!

Faces of NextGen LIVE!

Faces of NextGen LIVE! is a popular feature hosted by our Social Media Coordinator Melanie McComb and Education Coordinator Eric Wells. They have had many fascinating guests this year including George G Morgan, Blaine Bettinger and Steve Fulton UE, but our most watched interview was with Scott Fisher of Extreme Genes:

Partnerships

We were very excited to enter into our first partnership with the Ontario Genealogical Society this year.  OGS is Canada’s largest member supported genealogical organization and is dedicated to cooperating with, offering support to and sharing experience and technical support to other genealogical organizations.

OGS has provided NextGen with financial support, as well as promotional support in the OGS weekly online newsletter and an information page on the OGS website.

Meetups

Here at NextGen, we aim to organize as many meetups as we can at conferences around the country.  This year was no exception. Our most popular meetup was at RootsTech – we had a great turn out and it was a lot of fun!

In The Press

NextGen was featured several times in the press this year.

Our Content Coordinator Becky Zoglmann wrote a piece for the OGS blog detailing the efforts of NextGen and the use of technology in genealogy.

Eric Wells, our Education Coordinator, was featured on The Genealogy Connection podcast where he discussed his first experiences in genealogy, the work of NextGen and some family anecdotes.  You can listen to the interview here.

Leadership Team

Our volunteer Leadership Team added several new faces this year.   We welcomed Emily Philips as our graphic designer, Theresina Lloyd as our Treasurer, Eric Schubert as our Volunteer Coordinator and Kathleen Kaldis as our Hereditary Society Outreach Coordinator.

Donations

For the second year,  we participated in #GivingTuesday with much success – we received many donations from our supporters.  As NextGen is a volunteer run organization, we rely solely on donations and support from the community.

There is still a little time left before the end of the year and we would love if you would consider a year end donation to our organization.  Donations can be made through our Facebook Page and via Paypal.

We also have our NextGen merchandise store at Zazzle – we do get a percentage from the sale of any merchandise so go ahead and show your NextGen pride!

We have big plans for the new year with a continued presence at national conferences, partnerships with Genealogical Societies and The NextGen Scholarship.  2019 will be our biggest and best year yet!

Meet your NextGen Leadership Team – Eric Schubert

Name: Eric Schubert
Age: 17
Location
: New Jersey

What is your role at The NextGen Genealogy Network?

Volunteer Coordinator – I make sure that volunteers are representing NextGen at genealogical events and conferences throughout the country.

How did you hear about NextGen?

I heard about NextGen on Twitter and really was intigued by its mission. I applied for the Volunteer Coordinator position shortly after to get involved and was happy to be accepted.

When did you first get interested in genealogy?

I would say I first got involved in genealogy via a mixture of two experiences. My grandparents all passed in a short time period when I was younger, so I didn’t feel as if I knew my family history, etc. Around that time period, I was also home sick during the winter often and would be searching for something to do. My Mom suggested I try and do something productive, and research my family history after seeing one of those “Ancestry.com” commercials – I did, and the rest is history.

Do you have a specific area of expertise or interest?

Not yet. I try my hand at everything!

What is your favorite type of genealogical record?

Naturalization records. I feel like they’re the type of record that people think of when they are asked about genealogy, so I enjoy researching & sharing them.

If you could meet any ancestor, who would it be?

My great grandmother, Janet. She died when my Mother was younger and I’ve talked with many people who knew her well. On all accounts, she was the sweetest person and I have many of her old scrapbooks, etc that I’ve digitized. So, I just always love researching her.

Are you involved in any local societies/organizations?

Yes – I am a member of two local historical societies in my area.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to a new genealogist?

Stay focused & organized.

Do you plan on becoming a Certified or Accredited Genealogist in the future?

Definitely! I plan on doing so once I graduate from college in 2023.

Where can we find you online? (FB/Instagram/website/email etc)

Faces of NextGen LIVE! Meet Adina Newman

The NextGen Genealogy Network’s Faces of NextGen LIVE! is our popular Youtube interview series.  In this recorded interview, our Social Media Coordinator Melanie McComb conducted a great interview with Dr Adina Newman.  Adina is the founder of My Family Genie where she assists clients in both traditional and genetic genealogy and shares personal stories and strategies in her blog. A particular specialty is Jewish genealogy, and she serves as a moderator for a popular Jewish DNA group on Facebook. She is an educator and has degrees in history and education, including her doctorate in educational administration and policy studies.

Want to say hello to your fellow young genealogists during a fun and informal interview with NextGen? Let us know at [email protected].

Giving Tuesday 2018

NextGen Genealogy Network has once again joined #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Occurring this year on November 27, #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the US) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday to kick off the holiday giving season and inspire people to collaborate and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.

Last year was our first year taking part in Giving Tuesday and it was a huge success. We have some exciting projects in the pipeline, including the NextGen Genealogy Scholarship (coming January 2019), as well a new educational series and increased presence at events around the country.

In order to continue to grow NextGen, we need your help. We are committed to the mission of building connections between all generations, providing resources to promote the next generation’s engagement in the genealogical community, and offering innovative, virtual opportunities for development. To implement various projects and programs, we are asking for our members show their support on #GivingTuesday with a donation to NextGen.   Any donation is appreciated!

Those who are interested in joining NextGen Genealogy Network’s GivingTuesday initiative can visit tnggn.org and click on the green “DONATE NOW” button. We will also be accepting donations through the ‘DONATE’ button on our Facebook page.

For more details about the #GivingTuesday movement, visit the #GivingTuesday website, givingtuesday.org.

Sincerely,

The NextGen Genealogy Network Leadership Team
